Permission Slip

April 16, 2025 by Andy Roark DVM MS

Good news! I have something for you. It’s a permission slip that lets you only worry about today’s problems. This gets you out of any ruminating on pain from the past and also worrying about problems that either haven’t actually happened or that you can’t yet do anything about.

Here’s how it works: Think about a problem. If this is not a problem you can actually do anything about today, then you get to stop thinking about it. Let’s check out some examples.

“What if the difficult client who is coming in tomorrow is mean to me?”

Pass. You will deal with that tomorrow.

“What if I can’t get everything done?”

You only have to figure out what you can do today and do that.

“What if democracy is ending and we are heading for a dystopian future?”

I have very good news… This is definitely not a today problem for you to add to your to-do list, so you can put it down for now.

See? This is a wonderful permission slip to have!

If you don’t need it today, you can print this slip and save it. At some point you will feel like you’re carrying the entire world, and that will be the day for you to pull it out. It’s amazing how much more manageable everything feels when you have a pass to only worry about what you can do right now.

You don’t have to thank me. Just try your best to put this to good use.

Best wishes,

    Andy

Please note: This pass can be duplicated, transferred, and/or used repeatedly.  No one is going to scan it, so you don’t even have to print it out. Super convenient, I know.
